Week 23: Geometric

Hello. This week is all about geometry. A geometric pattern is any geometric object repeated.  So basically, you could argue that all objects (which can be described using types of geometry), when repeated, could be considered a geometric pattern. However, I’m focusing specifically on Euclidean geometry; the standard bearer of geometry. This means anything with straight lines and smooth curves (i.e. anything from Euclidean geometry) fits into my theme. So while something like fractal geometry- which describes natural objects like trees, flowers, rivers, etc- is included within Euclidean space itself and could be considered a “geometric pattern”, it is effectively distinct from Euclidean geometry, thus, no flowers this week. So this week will be focused on all those circles, rectangles, and triangles we know and love.

I volunteered with Junior Achievement on Thursday of this week, so I had to wear company-sponsored clothing that day, so it’ll be a 4-day week for this theme.

Let’s get into it.

Monday

Tuesday

Really liked this blazer and necklace combo. Loved the contrasting geometric shapes together. Felt very good.

Wednesday

Really liked the color contrast this day.

Friday

This felt very spring/summer appropriate with the colors. Plus these shoes are insanely (surprisingly) comfortable. Could have walked to/from work in them.

Week 22: Thrifted

This week will highlight some of the really amazing finds from thrift shops I’ve had. The stores are mostly in Nebraska and mostly still open. I’ll indicate them in each day’s descriptions.

I really enjoy shopping at thrift stores. Whether it’s seeing vintage pieces or just unwanted ones from other people. It’s always fun to find treasure in another person’s trash.

Also, as a note, I don’t own enough thrifted things to make the entire outfits thrifted, so it’ll just be specific pieces I’m focusing on.

Monday

We start the week off designer.

This dress is fantastic. I found it at The Humble Lily in Omaha off of 107th and Pacific. I can’t recommend this place enough. This is non-profit run by the Bethlehem House that provides emergency housing for primarily pregnant women. I suggest to all my friends in Omaha that they go here at least once to shop and also consider donating any unwanted clothing to them.

Not only am I happy to support this cause, but this dress is forreal forreal. The dress is from a high-end New York fashion house, Carolina Herrera. Standard dresses from this brand retail around $2000 right now at Neiman Marcus. So that fact that I was able to find this dress in my size and pay $120 for it is astounding.

img_20190422_111620 Dress: Carolina Herrera, Shoes: Tahari

Tuesday

Got a little mix of thrift stores here.

The cheetah print top is from Beacon’s Closet in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. God, this thrift store was amazing. It was so huge and so well organized, which isn’t always the case. We found so much great stuff there.

The blue cardigan is from a Thrift World in Omaha. I remember getting some of my favorite pieces from this place like 6 years ago in a single trip.

img_20190423_100606 Shirt: Edward, Cardigan: Weathervane, Pants: Everlane, Shoes: Antonio Melani

Wednesday

This dress is Scout all the way. It’s a vintage piece I found a couple years ago there, and I love it so much. The purple is so amazing, and the length/shape of the dress is completely different than other dresses I own. I tried to make it a little more work appropriate by pairing it with a blazer, but normally I wear this dress in fairly casual scenarios.

The necklace is a piece I found at a sidewalk festival in Blackstone in Omaha a couple years ago. According to the guy who sold it to me, he picked up a bunch of pieces like it in Tibet. No idea how true that is, but I liked the piece anyway.

img_20190424_125725 Dress: Alison Peters, Blazer: Doc & Amelia, Shoes: Madewell, Necklace: No brand

Thursday

I love this vintage orange top. I found it at a store in Omaha that was called Kleveland, which did a mix of vintage and regular retail. I also wanted to show you this beautiful vintage Dooney & Bourke purse I bought there, so I paired it with this outfit. Unfortunately, Kleveland closed down. It’s such a shame, I actually found quite a few pieces there I really liked.

img_20190425_132330 Top: Thrifted – no brand, Pants: Gap, Shoes: Kelsi Dagger, Purse: Dooney & Bourke

Friday

Back to Scout. Probably the most dependable and most often-visited thrift store I have there. I actually bought this top and skirt together, because I loved them as an outfit. And guess what, I still love them as an outfit.

I also wanted to call attention to this beautiful thrifted bib necklace I found at Beacon’s Closet in Brooklyn. It’s a J.Crew piece that came out probably in early 2000s? Such a cool find, considering my accidental obsession with all things J.Crew.

Week 21: Grayscale

Happy Easter everyone! This week’s theme was pretty popular with my friends. And also with me. The theme is grayscale. My outfits were white, black, and gray only.

This was basically a sister theme to my all black week, thus why I liked it so much.

All my outfits were very muted and enjoyable for me. But also felt appropriate for spring. Great combo.

Monday

Had a couple important meetings Monday, so I tried to keep it very professional. I liked this a lot.

img_20190415_101455 Top: Gap, Blazer: Doc & Amelia, Skirt: J.Crew, Shoes: Rothys

Tuesday

I wear this dress all the time. It makes sense. I love it. Loved all the texture in both the dress and the shoes.

img_20190416_102836 Dress: Daisy Street, Top: J.Crew, Shoes: Marc Fisher, Necklace: Urban Outfitters

Wednesday

This was like… comfy and almost casual? I really liked the gray top/bottom pieces with the cardigan/shoes as accents of white

img_20190417_131211 Top: J.Crew, Pants: Gap, Cardigan: Banana Republic, Shoes: Com+Sens, Bracelet: Banana Republic

Thursday

Super simple outfit, but I really liked it. This dress is amazingly soft.

img_20190418_133040 Dress: Esprit, Shoes: Truffle Collection

Friday

Friday! Probably my favorite outfit, out of a group of outfits I really liked. The skirt is definitely more casual, and thus definitely me. Also loooove this gray sweater, wish I could wear it all the time. It’s weird. I accidentally bleached this sweater once, so it’s got this color inconsistency, almost a tye-dye, that I actually love. I can never recreate it purposefully and I’m very afraid of this shirt wearing down one day.

img_20190419_105655 Top: J.Crew, Skirt: J.Crew, Cardigan: Ann Taylor Loft, Shoes: Kelsi Dagger, Necklace: Urban Outfitters

Week 20: See through appropriate for work

Happy Sunday, y’all. This week I highlighted sheer pieces. At this point, I’m purposely challenging any clothing “rule” I can find that might exist at a conservative work place. Nothing was too risque, in my opinion. But it’s fun to at least push the envelope.

I think I’ve decided I didn’t like Friday’s outfit. It was too busy (which sometimes can work), but this one was not cohesive. Oh well, they’re not all going to be winners.

Monday

This was a fairly classic look. This is probably the type of outfit I’d wear daily, if I wasn’t doing these ridiculous themes.

img_20190408_114517 Top: Ann Taylor, Blazer: Doc & Amelia, Pants: Gap, Shoes: Kelsi Dagger

Tuesday

I really liked the skin-ton palette of this outfit.

img_20190401_180837
Top: Pins and Needles, Pants: Asos, Shoes: Gianni Bini

Wednesday

It’s a kimono. It’s so very good.

Seethrough
Dress: J.Crew, Kimono: Lipslide, Shoes: Tahari, Bracelet: Lulu’s

Thursday

I think the shoes are probably what make me like this look so much. But yes, I loved this day. Was very me.

img_20190411_105417 Top: Ann Taylor Loft, Pants: Everlane, Shoes: Com + Sens

Friday

So here it is. The outfit isn’t very good. The fit is a little sloppy, and the prints are too similar to pair well together. Both pieces are really fun, beautiful on their own. But as a whole, I won’t choose this outfit again. Perhaps maybe the undershirt should not have stood out as much? Made a white or beige undershirt would have been better with this sheer shirt. Oh well.

Week 19: Linda Rodin and a visiting blog guest

Hello everyone. It’s Linda Rodin week. It’s also Krysten week. My friend Krysten visited for a cancer research conference (what up, AACR). She was very gracious and allowed me to look through all the clothing she brought and style her for the 4 days she attended.

So in addition to my original theme, I will be posting Krysten’s looks, as well!

Back to your regularly scheduled program…

Linda Rodin was model in Italy in the 1960s. Since then, she’s become a fashion icon around the world. She has an incredibly effortless, chic style. One of the things I love is that she perfectly mixes classic pieces- that could really be in anyone’s closet- with completely funky details. Her actual fits are incredible. I swear, this woman has the best tailor in the world. Based on this week and my research of her, I think I’m definitely going to be reusing some of these outfits for my own more casual weekend nights.

Also, the girl doesn’t like heels. It’s wonderful. My feet really enjoyed this week.

Here are some excellent pictures of the woman.

LR1LR2LR3

Anyway. Here are some pictures of me and my beautiful, smart friend Krysten. I don’t know her clothing brands, but in the case where I supplemented outfits with my own pieces, I’ll try and provide as much info as possible.

Sunday

This was Krysten’s first day of conference. Had a nice little introduction party, so she chose this standout beautiful dress, which she brought. I BELIEVE it’s an Antonio Melani.

img_20190331_175941 Dress: Antonio Melani?, Belt (mine): J.Crew, Necklace (mine): Robyn Rhodes

Monday

Look at us. Little professionals together. Krysten’s color palette (both skin tone and personal preference) lends itself to whites and blues, so we have a couple outfits with that color story. As for me, It’s 70s mod wide leg pants and long sleeve tops all the way down.

Tuesday

Krysten got so cute and professional Tuesday. I got so cute and platformy.

Wednesday

This was Krysten’s final day of conference 😦

She stayed with me and Jack for the rest of the week, which was amazing, but I was sad to no longer be styling her. She was such a good sport and she brought some really great pieces. We both loved this dress and its SLEEVES ❤

My outfit felt very me. Very simple, straightforward fit and pieces with pop of color.

Thursday

Back to just me. Sorry guys.

This was a favorite outfit of the week for me, though. I’ma start wearing these little bow tie things all the damn time now. It was just a belt that came with a dress that I realized I was never going to wear with the dress, but I’m grateful I didn’t throw it away.

Friday

Seriously. When I was researching Linda Rodin’s style, I saw the platfrom shoe and just ran with it. Any excuse to wear them for me.

Photo_2019-04-05_11-14-53_AM Dress: Daisy Street, Sweater: Frank and Oak, Shoes: Nurture, Belt:  Nations Leather, Watch: D1 Milano, Earring: My mom’s

Super fun week! I hope you all liked it, too!

Week 18: J.Crew

Here is a reality. I can wear an entire week (admittedly, more than a week) of solely J Crew clothing. I, for some reason, own that much J.Crew.

Everything (within reason) that I wear this week will be from J.Crew. My undergarments are my own business. But everything else. That includes jewelry, belts, shoes, everything.

Now I only have 3 pairs of shoes from J.Crew and J.Crew-associated stores. So I will be repeating the 3 pairs of shoes this week. And two pair are from Madewell, a sister brand owned by the same parent company. But I’m going to count it. Because I want at least 3 shoe options.

I will obviously be pretty preppy this week, so I hope you all don’t hate it. What’s worse, this was probably my favorite week so far. I hope this doesn’t mean I’m preppy.

Monday

Mhmm. Great outfit.

img_20190325_084947 Shirt/Dress: J.Crew, Shoes/Belt: Madewell

Tuesday

Love this damn cape.

Photo_2019-03-29_10-56-59_AM Shirt/Skirt/Cape/Earrings: J.Crew, Shoes: Madewell

Wednesday

Love the pattern and material combos here. You can see the velvet belt in the zoom-in.

Thursday

Mhmm. Love this gray color scheme.

img_20190328_102416 Sweater/Skirt/Necklace: J.Crew, Shoes: Madewell

Friday

Casual J.Crew Friday! This outfit was very fun.

Bonus Post: seasonal wardrobes and the inadvertent rejection of capsule wardrobe

This is not a weekly theme post! I decided I wanted to talk about seasonal wardrobes and my inability to embrace the capsule lifestyle.

Some quick definitions:

Seasonal wardrobe is pretty straightforward. Collection of clothes you wear for a specific season and put away for other seasons. For me, I break my seasonal wardrobes into two: Fall/Winter, Spring/Summer.

Below is evidence of my fall/winter storage bins:

img_20190323_120455

A capsule wardrobe is a small collection of basic, essential items that will never go out of fashion and never need to be put into storage for a season. To some extent, we all have capsule wardrobes. Most of us own white t-shirts, a pair of blue or black jeans, and a ballet flat. These are the types of pieces expected to be included in a capsule wardrobe. Where I diverge from this is my rampant and inexcusable caprice in style preferences. About every 12 months I make significant, sweeping changes to my fashion interests. Which means that even my most basic items (there are some exceptions to this) become absolutely uninteresting and unwearable to me.

What many people do is a combination of these two wardrobe styles. You have a capsule wardrobe that you wear all year-round, and you seasonally rotate pieces to supplement.

Now, because of my job, I have a larger capsule wardrobe than I’ve ever had before. There are neutral button-up shirts, shift dresses, and work pants that I will always have available to me, as needed for work. However, my non-work clothes are almost entirely seasonal. Other than black skinny jeans and t-shirts, I rotate out pants, skirts, dresses, tops, jackets, shoes, shorts, sweaters, even socks for my two seasons.

The world is moving towards non-seasonal wardrobes. Which makes sense. Weather is weird now. It can be incredibly cold one day, then hot the next. Also, seasonal fashion collections have changed. It’s no longer ‘pastels in Spring’ and ‘merlots in Fall’. Fashion houses/designers have moved away from these restrictive color palettes. But I’ve maintained my seasonal wardrobe for several reasons. 1) I literally don’t have enough space in my closet to have all my shoes out at the same time. 2) Seasonal wardrobe lets you basically have two completely unique wardrobes. It’s so much fun to change out your wardrobe and remember a piece that you haven’t seen in 6 months. And 3) To me, there’s something meaningful and symbolic about that seasonal transition. I love having a physical manifestation of the change. Spring/Summer Grace is a lighter, more fun version of Fall/Winter. I’m sure it’s some kind of larger subconscious metaphor for my views on life, death, and rebirth, etc.

What I’m ignoring in this conversation are the political and socioeconomic benefits of capsule wardrobes. Those that truly embrace a capsule wardrobe (as defined in the 1970s as a collection of a few essential items of clothing, more recent blog posts suggest this collection to be somewhere around the size of 40 pieces of clothing including shoes) greatly reduce their contribution to the harm fast fashion incurs on our world, both in the context of environmental impact and fast fashion’s detrimental effect on developing nations and their existing textile industries. This is a concept I struggle with, as both a self-aware, self-defined “citizen of the world” and a budget-conscious fashion enthusiast. I acknowledge this is something I don’t have a good answer for and don’t always take into account when I’m making clothing purchases or when I began the process of building up my wardrobe.

This post is neither a condemnation of capsule wardrobes nor an attempt to seduce you to the side of seasonal clothing storage. Everything is great. What works for you is the absolutely the best choice for you.  Obviously my super-bummer previous paragraph might be something you want to take into account when you make future purchases. But, since spring is just around the corner, it felt appropriate to espouse and wax poetic on my wardrobe philosophies.

Thanks for reading!

Week 17: Sweaters

Happy Sunday. This week contained the final day of winter, March 19th. To celebrate, I dedicated a theme to all things warm and comfy. It’s sweater week!

Primarily my focus was to wear my favorite sweaters. Some of these are fairly oversized and schlumpy. That’s not a word, but I really feel like it describes their essence. As always, it was a fun challenge attempting to professionalize the clothing I chose.

Let’s get into it.

Monday

This one was a weird one. I had a hard time getting this yellow sweater to fit well. It was a little too loose and free-flowing to pair with the thin material of the skirt and it also didn’t want to behave well with the chambray underneath.

img_20190318_105948 Sweater: Forever21, Top: J.Crew, Skirt: Dillard’s Clearance, Shoes: Tahari, Necklace: Chelsea Market NYC

Tuesday

I feel like I’ve had this sweater forever. It’s been through a lot with me. I really enjoy its over-sizedness and the little attached white undershirt thing. This outfit felt very me.

img_20190319_120308 Sweater: J.Crew, Pants: Everlane, Shoes: Antonio Melani, Necklace: Flea Market in Omaha

Wednesday

Heheh, I loved this outfit. So witchy. The sleeves of this sweater have a bell shape outward before tightening at the wrist, which I really enjoy. Plus I got to wear my Rothys, which are my new go-to easy shoe that goes with everything.

img_20190320_110850 Sweater: Free People, Skirt: The Limited, Shoes: Rothys, Necklace: Chelsea Market NYC

Thursday

Sweater dressssss. Love this. It’s one of the softest dresses I own. And it’s from ASOS. Can’t believe its quality. It was such a great find.

img_20190321_114241 Sweater dress: Esprit, Shoes: Monkl, Belt: J.Crew

Friday

Wooh! SunTrust adopted a ‘dress for your day’ clothing policy. Which means on Fridays I can get away with being more casual. Those are jeans! So exciting. This felt almost like a standard outfit I would wear on the weekends. I really happy about the policy change. Hopefully it means I can take some more risks in my clothing choices for work, in the future.

img_20190322_082814 Sweater: thrifted, Pants: Alexa Chung for AG, Shoes: Marc Fisher, Necklace: Francesca’s

Week 16: Animal

Oh hello. This week was a weird one in my life. I just got back from New Zealand and I lost my phone in the San Francisco airport. I still committed to my weekly theme, but I didn’t take pictures, because no phone. So all the majority of these pictures were taken at home where I had access to a camera. But yes, back to the theme.

This was a fairly loose theme. I didn’t want to throw on animal print for 5 days. That felt boring and repetitive. So instead I embraced the theme diagonally. Each outfit is either made of actual animal material or is themed around a specific animal. Insane, I know. But whatever. It was enjoyable. I hope you like it?

Monday

This dress isn’t actually suede. It’s be like $300 if it was. But it is faux suede. So that’s close. The tiny necklace IS in fact made of real dinosaur. Paleontologists hate me. The upper on the toe cap of the shoes are straight up calf hair. Because fuck baby cows.

But it was a fun outfit.

img_20190311_124440 Dress: Calvin Klein, Shoes: Calvin Klein, Cardian: Loft, Necklace: From vendor in Chelsea market NYC

Tuesday

Snnnnnake. The leather (pleather) skirt and metallic green top felt super slithery-snake to me. Plus leather loafers.

img_20190319_213604 Top: Thrifted, Skirt: Peter Nygard, Shoes: Madewell

Wednesday

Woodland creature. The outfit felt forest-y. Primarily because of the color scheme, but also because of all those owls on my shirt. Wool pencil skirt and leather loafers. I don’t talk about this shirt enough. It has pockets. I rest my case.

img_20190319_214329 Top: Lumiere, Skirt: J.Crew, Shoes: G.H. Bass & Co

Thursday

We’re on a safari. This outfit actually embraced the animal print. I believe this is cheetah print (as opposed to leopard print). But the overall combo felt ‘formal, professional Jane Goodall’. Which is something I think we’re all striving for in our lives. Leather heels, too!

img_20190319_214630 Top: Edward Petites, Pants: Asos, Shoes: Tahari

Friday

I think to think of this outfit as ‘bird of paradise’. Basically I put together bright colors and bright patterns. I think it definitely drew attention my way. Finished the outfit with patent, leather and suede loafers.

img_20190319_214951 Top: Dex, Skirt: Gibson Latimer, Shoes: Kelsi Dagger

Really, what I learned from this week is that I have an unending collection of animal-material based shoes.

Week 15: 50s Housewife

When I’m not embracing my punk/goth aesthetic there’s a shameful part of me interested in 50s housewife fashion.

This week will be dedicated to that part of me.

As you’ve already noticed, I have several fashion icons popular in this era, so it makes sense I have some clothing appropriate to the times. Ideally this week won’t simply be a re-hashing of previous week’s themes.

It was a very short week (3 days!). And I leave for New Zealand tomorrow. I will be gone two weeks, which means I won’t be posting for a while.

I may post some things from those two weeks, but we’ll see.

BYE BYE

Tuesday

This felt 50s because of the neckline and shape of the shirt. Also genuinely because it’s a vintage shirt I thirfted. Would have been better had I worn the pair of t-strap heels I planned to wear, but I chose to wear loafers instead, so it kind of took away from the feel of the outfit.

IMG_7154 Top: Thrifted, Skirt: From Dillard’s clearance, Shoes: Scholls

Wednesday

Love the colors here. The length of the skirt felt very housewife, plus the short block heel on the tweed shoes.

IMG_7155 Top: Ann Taylor, Skirt: Dillard’s clearance, Shoes: Marc Fisher

Thursday

This one felt a little more ‘bobbysoxer’ than ‘housewife’. Oh well, still felt nice and 50s. Really enjoyed this one!

See you guys in a couple weeks!
